A visitor asked the custodian if he could see the president of the company.

"He's gone."
"What about the vice-president?"
"He's in Chicago."
"The treasurer?"
"Home, sick."
"Well, who's running this business?"
"Guess it's just RUNNING!"

8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: (KJV)

Satan's job does include influencing lost people. But he's not too interested in that part of his job. His main function is to keep Christians from doing their job. He's really happy when the church is just "running."

So the ole devil called a convention of all the demon-angels. He said,

"We can't keep Christians from going to church. But we can keep them so busy during the week that the church has no influence on their lives.

1. Keep them so busy they don't have time for daily Bible study and prayer so they won't have any power in their witness,
   
2. Persuade husbands and wives to work 6 and 7 days a week to "get somewhere" in the world, and they will live empty lifestyles,
   
3. Keep them too busy to spend time with their children and the family will degenerate,
   
4. Overstimulate their minds with worldly attitudes so that they cannot hear that "still small voice,"
   
5. Persuade them to keep cd's, vcr's, tv's, and pc's going all the time so they'll stay away from Christian influences,
   
6. Keep sensual models in front of them all the time so that they will become fixated upon outward beauty and become dissatisfied with their spouses,
   
7. Give them Santa Claus so they will not talk about the love of God as the real meaning of Christmas,
   
8. Give them the Easter Bunny so they won't talk about the power of God in the resurrection,
   
9. Help them have recreation in excess and send them to many sporting events, concerts, plays, movies, etc.
   

In short, keep them very busy RUNNING so they won't have time to do the work God gave them to do!"

The message from Peter is that we should be vigilant and not allow the old devil to keep us from God's purposes in our lives!
