THROUGH THE BIBLE IN THREE YEARS

DAILY DEVOTIONS

HI!

As we get older, the manner in which we mentally associate things changes.

For instance, I recently noticed that the Roman numeral for 40 is:
“XL” !!

John 19:17-18
17 And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha:

In a recent study, the George Barna research group showed that 61% of Americans believe their
MAIN PURPOSE is to have a sense of personal enjoyment in life.

Jesus was a Jew under Roman authority.
As such, He paid his taxes – Peter’s also – Matt. 17:27.

Jesus made it his “custom,” or practice to be in the Lord’s house on the Lord’s Day – Luke 4:16.

Jesus was driven by DUTY, not personal enjoyment.
When He went to the cross, it was not for a “feel good feeling!”

Richard Foster said, in his book “Prayer, Finding the Heart’s True Home,” that:
“We want to pray as we feel drawn to it. We fear that commitment (to prayer) will make it seem like compulsory exercises rather than freewill offerings.”
Then, Mr. Foster quoted Dietrick Bonhoeffer to make a point:
“Prayer is NOT a free-will offering to God: It is OBLIGATORY service, something which God REQUIRES!”

I might add that personal Bible study is also obligatory service.
(See John 8:31-32, and John 14:15)

Jesus associated His love for us with DUTY!
Love inspires and motivates duty!

How are you doing with: prayer, Bible study, church attendance, giving?

Love ya,
Bruce
