Little Sean had been "testy" all morning. Each time Mom told him to do something, he rebelled.

Finally, Mom had had enough. She said, "Sean, you come over here and sit down, NOW!"

As he sat down, Sean said, "I'm sitting down on the outside, but I'm standing up on the inside!"

Malachi 2:1-3
1 And now, O ye priests, this commandment is for you.
2 If ye will not hear, and if ye will not lay it to heart, to give glory unto my name, saith the LORD of hosts, I will even send a curse upon you, and I will curse your blessings: yea, I have cursed them already, because ye do not lay it to heart.
3 Behold, I will corrupt your seed, and spread dung upon your faces, even the dung of your solemn feasts; and one shall take you away with it.

Keep in mind the Hebrew word mitzvah, is the one used for "commandment." That word can mean ordinance, law, precept or direct command. God is issuing an ordinance or a precept concerning the future of the priests.

Perhaps I should reiterate that these priests to whom Malachi speaks are ones who have been brought back from the Babylonian captivity. They had seen what disobedience could do! Yet they still had the "form" of religion with no real intention of obedience.

God says, "IF" they hear and do not obey the call to repentance, then God will send a "curse." That curse is nothing more than the rescinding of their blessings. God raises up the "pitcher" of grace and allows it to cease pouring. The pitcher is still there, and able to be poured out again. But they must REPENT!

Is this inconsistent with God's character and nature? NO!

The grace which leads to salvation is UNconditional. God's love is continually poured out calling men to repentance. The reason that grace is UNconditional is because Christ has already paid the price.

However, the grace that allows continual blessings is predicated upon our repentance from sinfulness, and our obedience to God's will in our lives.

Notice that God says His treatment of them for NOT repenting, will be SHAMEFUL. Verse 3 indicates that God will allow them to be treated in a disgusting manner because of their repetitive hardness and rebellion from repentance. To spread the dung of the feasts upon their faces shows that God will not only refuse their sacrifices, but He will allow those sacrifices to become meaningless. The "seed" will be corrupted; there will be no fruition to their oblations.

Friends, when we act in sinful mannerisms without repentance, our prayers don't get past the ceiling! The "pitcher" of blessings is halted, and SHAME is next!

Let us take a lesson from the history of this text and from the history of some European countries. They have too long worshipped the god of leisure, and now the beautiful cathedrals are EMPTY. There is no desire for evangelistic action.

2 Tim 3:1-5
1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.
2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,
4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; 5 Having a form of godliness , but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
