THROUGH THE BIBLE IN THREE YEARS
A duffer hit his tee shot into the woods.
Trying to hit out, he hit a tree and bounced across the fairway into
some more woods.
Then he hit the ball out of those woods and into a sand trap.
He looked back and saw the club pro sitting in a golf cart watching him.
So he said, "Hey. Ya know if I hit that out of the sand near the hole I
can putt for a bogey."
The pro said, "Well, ya got a lot of FAITH!”
1 After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in
a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy
exceeding great reward.
2 And Abram said, Lord GOD, what wilt thou give me, seeing
I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of
3 And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed:
and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir.
4 And, behold, the word of the LORD came unto him, saying,
This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of
thine own bowels shall be thine heir.
5 And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward
heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them:
and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be.
6 And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him
Notice God says He Himself is Abraham's "shield" and "exceeding
When we love our Lord, He is our protector.
And when we love our Lord in faith, He is the END of our faith.
The exceeding great reward of Christians is to soon have sight of
Him in Whom we believe without sight.
God promised Abraham a son.
At that time, Abraham was about 90 years of age.
Genesis 17 records this promise reiterated, and there, it says he is
99 years of age.
That means Sarah (at the time of Genesis 15) was 80 years of age.
And when Sarah will have the child, she will be 90!
This is a promise only GOD can keep!!
God also promised Abraham that his descendants will number as
many as the stars of heaven!
That TOO is a promise only GOD can keep!
Now, look in verse 6.
There are two things stated that are very important.
First, God says that Abraham "believed.”
Secondly, God says that He "counted it to him (Abraham) as
Now that's what salvation is all about!
The Hebrew word for believe here is aman (aw man').
It means to be faithful and steadfast in long continuance.
That's basically the same as the meaning of the words faith or
believe in the New Testament, where it means "cling to.”
Isn't that what happens when a lost sinner gets saved?
Jesus said "whosoever believeth" (John 3:16).
And the Bible tells us that HIS righteousness is given to all who
"believe" in Jesus (2Cor. 5:21).
It is upon this "belief" in Jesus as Lord and Savior and Giver
of eternal life, that we are saved.
God counts that "belief" as righteousness!!
What IS that "belief?”
Well, in John 3:16, the term that Jesus used, is a common street
term that dealt with wrestling in those days.
It simply meant to run head-long into your opponent and cling to
him until one of you was dead!
Now ain't THAT a thought!!
And that is why "belief" can be equivocated with "surrender."
(See Luke 9:23 for instance.)
Abram "believed" God!
He would cherish and cling to the promise God made.
Are you believing God?
