THROUGH THE BIBLE IN THREE YEARS
Many years ago, I was assistant manager at the BX Annex on Barksdale AFB.
All the lights went out in one section of the store.
We called an electrician.
When he arrived, he and I went up to the attic to find the problem.
He was looking on one side of the attic, while I looked on the other side.
I found the line, and was picking it up, with my flashlight on it, to show the electrician.
But, as I picked up the line, there was a frayed part!
I HAD it; but it had ME!!
I couldn’t let go because it wouldn’t let go!
And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?
Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.
The lawyer (Luke 10:25 above) was placing emphasis on “do.”
He wanted to know what he had to accomplish in order to be sure of eternal life.
Salvation is not in accomplishment, it is in surrender to Jesus as LORD!
Peter said salvation must be preceded by “repent.” (Acts 2:38 above)
The Greek word from which “repent” is translated is: metanoeo.
That word means to think differently after something happens.
It not only means to have a change of mind, but also a change in PURPOSE!
After hearing the Gospel of Jesus, we should turn around --
stop going AWAY from Jesus, and start going TO Him.
One might say, upon repentance, we pick up the live wire!
Because, it is then that God gets hold of US!
Then God begins to work in us and through us. (Philippians 2:23 above)
There is one thing a person can “do” to receive eternal life.
But it is not an accomplishment; it is a surrender to Jesus.
It is a “turn around” – or “u turn” in life.
Paul best exemplified this type of surrender when he stated in Galatians 2:20,
“I am CRUCIFIED with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.”
One does not have to crucify themselves physically.
However we do crucify “self” spiritually.
We must DIE to self, and receive LIFE in Christ.
Then, He will have HOLD on us;
And, His power will begin to work in us.
