THROUGH THE BIBLE IN THREE YEARS
The fourth lesson of salvation is GIVING!
2 Cor 9:7
Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give;
not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.
Light from the Word.
Christ has done away with the Levitical priesthood, animal sacrifices,
and religious festivals and obligatory tithing.
Old Testament (Jewish) people were COMMANDED to tithe -- and also give!
The tithe added up to about 22%!!
The New Testament never gives a certain percentage point as an obligatory
and required standard for our giving.
Instead, the Scriptures declare, "Let each one do just as he has purposed in his heart;
not grudgingly or under compulsion; for God loves a cheerful giver" (2 Cor. 9:7).
If Christians want to give ten per cent as Abraham and Jacob did, they are perfectly free to do so.
However, if one decides to give 9 per cent or 11 per cent, or 20 per cent or 50 per cent, then he/she may do that as well.
The standard of giving is not a fixed percentage point, but the example of our Lord and Savior --
"For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich" (2 Cor. 8:9).
Our standard of giving is Christ Himself, who did not give 10 per cent or 20 per cent or even 50 per cent,
but 100 per cent!
He gave everything He had, including His very life in order to redeem sinful men and women like you and me!
We should give anonymously, voluntarily and cheerfully.
When we consider the purposes of giving, we see a need for MORE than a tithe!
We give to provide for the poor, support the staff, and to build outreach into the community and beyond.
