THROUGH THE BIBLE IN THREE YEARS
I do not understand why all elements contract when frozen;
but water EXPANDS!
But, I KNOW it!
I know it from experience!
14 For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
15 Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named,
16 That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;
17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,
18 May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height;
19 And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.
I've written many devotions, and several sermons on the prayer above.
It is the prayer of Paul for the church at Ephesus.
There are three major requests Paul places before God on their behalf:
1. that they might be strengthened by God's indwelling Holy Spirit,
2. that Christ may dwell in their hearts by faith,
3. that they might know the love of Christ - it's breadth, length, depth, and height -
and they might be rooted and grounded in that same love.
How can we explain the love of God?
To begin, we must know the height of Christ in His regal splendor.
He was and is God always.
He is God of very God, and the Creator of all things.
To Him every knee shall bow, and every tongue confess that He is LORD.
Can anyone explain the height of Christ?
Then we must know the depth of Christ.
Being in such regal splendor, how can we explain that He descended to earth and became a servant?
How could God come to suffer rejection, hatred, treachery, and the death of the most cruel instrument ever invented by man -
Can anyone explain the depth of Christ?
And, of course we must know the width of Christ.
Whom shall He accept?
Will He not accept the worst sinner as well as the least sinner?
Will He not reach beyond the gutter to the garbage pit and receive even me?
How can anyone ever know the width of Christ?
Finally, we must know the length of Christ.
How vast a chasm does He bridge?
Does He not cast a shadow beyond hell?
And does His glory not extend above the heavens?
How can anyone know the length of Christ?
No, I do not understand the LOVE of Christ!
It is unfathomable to the greatest mind.
It is indefinable by any language.
But, praise God, we can KNOW that love of Christ!!
We can experience it through surrender to Him as Lord.
And we can even become rooted and grounded in that inexplicable, unfathomable love by continued surrender to His will in our lives.
And I, this day, pray not that you understand Christ's love, but that you KNOW it!
And that you become rooted and grounded in His likeness!
