THROUGH THE BIBLE IN THREE YEARS
This year I will make a resolution to shave at least 3 times per week.
And, I will make a resolution to stick to that resolution for at least one week.
For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death:
that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father,
even so we also should walk in newness of life.
But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.
Grammatically, the verb usage in the first Scripture above (Gal. 3:27) is different.
The subject is physical baptism.
The manner of that verb usage dictates that one must have “put on Christ” before having “been baptized into Christ.”
In other words, there is first an INNER change, THEN and outward action.
Now, the subject of the second Scripture above (Rom. 6:4) is spiritual baptism.
When we surrender to Christ, the first gift we receive is His Holy Spirit.
We submit to burying our old self IN Christ, and
are “raised” to a NEW life of living FOR Christ.
This is a work done BY God’s Holy Spirit IN a surrendered believer in Christ.
The INNER change is EXHIBITED by outward action.
Now, the subject of the third Scripture (Rom. 13:14) is RESOLVE, not a resolution.
“Put YE on the Lord Jesus Christ,” exhibits continued determination day by day.
The saved person determines to ACT upon the spiritual desires of Christ.
This determination provides the ability to put away the inordinate desires of sensuality, and live in sensibility.
I said all that to say this:
The statement of a resolution indicates a person’s resolve to do something.
So this year, those of you who have surrendered to Christ,
resolve to put MORE of Him on and in you.
