THROUGH THE BIBLE IN THREE YEARS
The other day I was talking to some friends over coffee.
We were considering our Congress, and how they were dealing with the “fiscal cliff.”
One friend asked, “When they’re giving away our money, why don’t they consider our values?”
I said, “Well, they are always hyper-sensitive to the issues from the loud modicums of society like
advocates of gambling, abortion, and homosexuality. But they are totally insensitive to the mainstream
of society like Christians, because we’re too quiet!”
One of my friends said, “Bro. Bruce, why don’t you go ahead and open up – tell us how you REALLY feel!”
2 Peter 3:18
But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.
As far as we know, these were the last words of admonition Peter wrote to the church.
“GROW in GRACE, and in the KNOWLEDGE of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”
The admonition is to grow in MORE than the glorious salvation that is in Christ.
It is to grow in the KNOWLEDGE of Him, Who by GRACE was out of step with the world!
Growing in knowledge of WHO He was, yes.
But also growing in His mannerisms!
For instance, Jesus was a FAITHFUL attender of church (Luke 4:16).
Jesus also spent much time in prayer (Luke 9:28).
And, He taught that men “ought ALWAYS to pray and not faint” (Luke 18:1).
Most assuredly, we should grow in those mannerisms.
Jesus also taught that men ought to have more than just a knowledge of the Bible;
they should have a WORKING knowledge of the TRUTHS of the Bible.
Answering the Sadducees, He said, “Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.” (Matt. 22:29)
The Holy Scriptures are the “sword” in the Hand of God’s Holy Spirit that brings conviction to man!
And, may I remind us, Jesus had harsh words for those who cast doubt on Him being from and of God.
He called them SNAKES! (Matt. 12:34)
In the same Scripture, Jesus said the “fruit” from the “tree” of faith was either GOOD or BAD,
depending upon the ACTIONS of man!! (Matt. 12:33)
Yes, as children of God we need to do the natural thing – GROW!
We need to grow in GRACE and in the KNOWLEDGE of Christ our Savior.
Growing in grace and knowledge, to me, means we should incorporate HIS mannerisms into our lifestyle!!
Does that mean being OUTSPOKEN against evil?
COUNT ON IT!!
