THROUGH THE BIBLE IN THREE YEARS

DAILY DEVOTIONS

HI!

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

Have you ever given thought to how powerful your words are?

Adlai Stevenson once wrote, "Man does not live by words alone, even though sometimes he does have to EAT THEM!"

Matt 19:16-22
16 And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?
17 And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.
18 He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness,
19 Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
20 The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet?
21 Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.
22 But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.

Here was a young man who'd been good all his life. Perhaps he thought himself good enough to attain heaven. But goodness will not, of itself, attain heaven. For the Lord says, "But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags..." (Isa 64:6)

All our goodness, without Christ, is just filth before God!

Jesus challenged the young man to give up self and follow Jesus as Lord. And the Bible says the young man went away SADDENED! He was saddened because his "lord" was his possessions. Perhaps he never realized that he didn't own them as much as they owned him!

Words are indeed powerful. For instance, have you ever said something you immediately wanted to UNsay? Of course you have. We all have.

Unspoken words are powerful too! How many times have you realized you SHOULD HAVE said something, but didn't?

For the Christian, spoken words in testimony of faith in Christ are powerful words. Jesus can use those words with His Holy Spirit to lead someone else to faith in Christ.

For the Christian, unspoken words are a testimony too. For instance, if we are faced with someone who denies the Lord Jesus, and we say nothing, our unspoken words are denial! Jesus said, "He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad." (Matt 12:30). Jesus also said, "Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven. But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven." (Matt 10:32-33)

A true confession of faith always leads to a profession of faith!

What are your unspoken words saying?

Love ya,
Bruce
