THROUGH THE BIBLE IN THREE YEARS
The easiest way to stay awake during a sermon is to deliver it!
And said unto them, Why sleep ye? rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation.
When do Christians sleep spiritually?
Usually, it's when things are going well.
Look back over your life.
When have you been most spiritually awake?
Most likely, it was when you were having difficulty.
Let's get an historical look at the situation in our text.
Jesus had been with the disciples for about 3 and 1/2 years.
He had been teaching, feeding multitudes, healing the blind, healing the lame and the deaf, and even raising the dead.
Crowds gathered when He and His disciples came into town.
Why, just last Sunday, Jesus had been lauded with praise as He entered Jerusalem on what we call "Palm Sunday."
Times were GOOD!
However, even though the disciples did not know it, Jesus knew that a tragedy was about to strike in their lives - and His.
Even now, Judas was bringing armed guards to arrest Jesus and take Him to a mock trial.
Then He would be crucified!
But when Jesus asked the disciples to pray with Him, they fell asleep!
Be ALERT dear Christian!
Good times are only too near tragedies!
Be watchful and pray!
Peter learned a valuable lesson from the aforementioned experience.
Later he wrote, "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion , walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:" (1 Peter 5:8)
Even now, the ole devil is silently working behind the scenes bringing tragedy into focus!
enhancing greed through the ever popular gambling,
enhancing "feel good" through alcohol and drugs,
enhancing selfishness through abortion,
enhancing alternate lifestyle through homosexualism,
and enhancing quietness among Christians through political satirism toward outspoken faith.
My friends, the devil is lurking!
And soon he will be leaping!
Now is not the time for Christians to be sleeping!
"Why sleep ye? rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation."
