THROUGH THE BIBLE IN THREE YEARS

This program of daily devotions is designed to take you through the Bible in three years. It is our desire to help you gain a better general understanding of God's Word.

Please understand that in a study this brief, we will be concerned with only the major emphases and context of the Scriptures.

Each day a devotion for one or two chapters is posted, beginning with chapter one of Genesis and going through chapter twenty-two of Revelation. You are free to print each page as it appears. If you miss a day, you may contact us and request that devotion. Please send your request, along with $.50 (p&h) for each page to:

JOSHUA

CHAPTER 3

1 And Joshua rose early in the morning; and they removed from Shittim, and came to Jordan, he and all the children of Israel, and lodged there before they passed over. 2 And it came to pass after three days, that the officers went through the host; 3 And they commanded the people, saying, When ye see the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, and the priests the Levites bearing it, then ye shall remove from your place, and go after it. 4 Yet there shall be a space between you and it, about two thousand cubits by measure: come not near unto it, that ye may know the way by which ye must go: for ye have not passed this way heretofore. 5 And Joshua said unto the people, Sanctify yourselves: for to morrow the LORD will do wonders among you.

When the two spies returned and told Joshua that the land was truly given over to them, then Joshua began preparations to cross Jordan according to God's Word.
Three days after moving to the banks of Jordan, Joshua instructs the "officers" to instruct the people.
Note here that they are to leave a distance between the Ark being carried by the priests themselves. We can not know the way unless we are led by the WORD of God. We certainly do not know the WAY (direction) to heaven. We can only know the WAY (Person of Jesus) to lead us, and HE is found in the WORD.

"...I am the way, the truth and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." (John 14:6)

Note also that they were to sanctify themselves (verse 5). To "sanctify" means to be cleansed and set apart for special service. We whould daily renew our relationship with the Lord so that we might be spiritually enabled to follow his leadership. And the way to renew that relationship is to confess and forsake our sins.

6 And Joshua spake unto the priests, saying, Take up the ark of the covenant, and pass over before the people. And they took up the ark of the covenant, and went before the people. 7 And the LORD said unto Joshua, This day will I begin to magnify thee in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that, as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee. 8 And thou shalt command the priests that bear the ark of the covenant, saying, When ye are come to the brink of the water of Jordan, ye shall stand still in Jordan. 9 And Joshua said unto the children of Israel, Come hither, and hear the words of the LORD your God. 10 And Joshua said, Hereby ye shall know that the living God is among you, and that he will without fail drive out from before you the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Hivites, and the Perizzites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Jebusites.

On the day appointed, Joshua tells the priests to go in front of the nation, and into the edge of the Jordan (verses 6 & 8).
God promises Joshua that this day He will cause him to be recognized as the new leader of Israel (verse 7).
Now Joshua calls the people to him and proclaims God's Word (verse 9).
God's Word at that time was this: that the people will KNOW He is God, and that He is driving out the inhabitants of Canaan.

11 Behold, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth passeth over before you into Jordan. 12 Now therefore take you twelve men out of the tribes of Israel, out of every tribe a man. 13 And it shall come to pass, as soon as the soles of the feet of the priests that bear the ark of the LORD, the Lord of all the earth, shall rest in the waters of Jordan, that the waters of Jordan shall be cut off from the waters that come down from above; and they shall stand upon an heap.

We'll see the purpose for the twelve men in chapter 4. But here is the WAY God is going to prove Himself, and show Joshua as the leader. God is going to cause the (swollen) Jordan River to STOP FLOWING! (See verse 15 - the parenthetical statement.)
The waters from the North will cease to flow and stand in "a heap." And the same will happen in the South.
This miracle will remind Israel of when they crossed the Red Sea.

14 And it came to pass, when the people removed from their tents, to pass over Jordan, and the priests bearing the ark of the covenant before the people; 15 And as they that bare the ark were come unto Jordan, and the feet of the priests that bare the ark were dipped in the brim of the water, (for Jordan overfloweth all his banks all the time of harvest,) 16 That the waters which came down from above stood and rose up upon an heap very far from the city Adam, that is beside Zaretan: and those that came down toward the sea of the plain, even the salt sea, failed, and were cut off: and the people passed over right against Jericho. 17 And the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD stood firm on dry ground in the midst of Jordan, and all the Israelites passed over on dry ground, until all the people were passed clean over Jordan.

It happened just like God said through Joshua! And the people were able to cross Jordan on DRY ground!
It's amazing how God is ALWAYS true to His Word! Here's a lesson to believers today. When God commands us to go and witness to others, the devil always tries to "swell up the river." But God will MAKE A WAY!
If we pray before we go, and believe God, He will DRY UP the devil's river and open the way of visitation and witness.
