THROUGH THE BIBLE IN THREE YEARS

This program of daily devotions is designed to take you through the Bible in three years. It is our desire to help you gain a better general understanding of God's Word.

Please understand that in a study this brief, we will be concerned with only the major emphases and context of the Scriptures.

Each day a devotion for one or two chapters is posted, beginning with chapter one of Genesis and going through chapter twenty-two of Revelation. You are free to print each page as it appears. If you miss a day, you may contact us and request that devotion. Please send your request, along with $.50 (p&handling) for each page to:

Song Of Solomon

CHAPTER 3

1 By night on my bed I sought him whom my soul loveth: I sought him, but I found him not. 2 I will rise now, and go about the city in the streets, and in the broad ways I will seek him whom my soul loveth: I sought him, but I found him not. 3 The watchmen that go about the city found me: to whom I said, Saw ye him whom my soul loveth? 4 It was but a little that I passed from them, but I found him whom my soul loveth: I held him, and would not let him go, until I had brought him into my mother's house, and into the chamber of her that conceived me. 5 I charge you, O ye daughters of Jerusalem, by the roes, and by the hinds of the field, that ye stir not up, nor awake my love, till he please.

There are two dreams recorded here in the Song.

In the first dream, the bride-to-be dreamed she wandered about the city trying to find her love.

When a person sleeps, often dreams reflect preoccupation of thought. Dreams are the mind's way of focusing upon a special thought. But in dreams, the mind also wanders through many facts that have been gathered. Sometimes a dream will have abrupt changes.

First, she came to some "watchmen" (guards) of the city, and asked them if they had seen her love. Receiving no answer she continues to search.

Finally, she found him and took him to a special place of her remembrance. The place of her mother's love, which is special to everyone.

The dream ends with her making the same charge she made in Chapter 2 - not to force love, but to wait upon its natural development.

Should we not be "preoccupied" with the love of Christ? His love is the most magnificent love of all! It is not uncommon for Christians to dream of the second coming of Christ, the crucifiction, the Garden of Gethsemane, or even the rapture.

6 Who is this that cometh out of the wilderness like pillars of smoke, perfumed with myrrh and frankincense, with all powders of the merchant? 7 Behold his bed, which is Solomon's; threescore valiant men are about it, of the valiant of Israel. 8 They all hold swords, being expert in war: every man hath his sword upon his thigh because of fear in the night. 9 King Solomon made himself a chariot of the wood of Lebanon. 10 He made the pillars thereof of silver, the bottom thereof of gold, the covering of it of purple, the midst thereof being paved with love, for the daughters of Jerusalem. 11 Go forth, O ye daughters of Zion, and behold king Solomon with the crown wherewith his mother crowned him in the day of his espousals, and in the day of the gladness of his heart.

In this second dream, the bride-to-be is looking forward to the wedding ceremony. She dreams of the procession and seeing Solomon being carried in on a "bed," or litter by servants.

In her dream, he is surrounded by "valiant men" all dressed in warrior's clothing.

She also dreamed of Solomon preparing a special "chariot" or transportable throne. Most notable about this throne is the royal appearance of "gold" and "purple." It represents the love of the king.

The Shulamite then calls to the ladies to go and behold the beauty of him coming for his bride.

The church today is looking forward to the second coming of Christ in which He will gather His bride (the church) to Himself for the great wedding feast.
All people are invited not only to behold, but also to be a part of this great ceremony (Revelation 17).
